Kong: Skull Island Review (Spoiler Free)

I had the chance to watch Kong: Skull Island this past weekend. I wasn’t very impressed by the 2005 King Kong movie. Probably because I felt like the film was such a long, drawn-out movie so I had high hopes for this one.

Allow me to begin with the good. I thought the use of colors in this film was great. When the island was first discovered you had this feeling of beauty, peace, and serenity, yet there is this big mystery that went with the island, as if it’s too good to be true. The way Kong looked in this film was great. There were many shots throughout where you can see just how massive Kong really is. The plot was pretty solid. There was a sense of purpose at the beginning, but the goal changed for those who traveled to the island once they saw Kong. Lastly, the monsters varied and the fighting sequences between Kong and the other monsters/humans were incredible.

Next, the bad. The movie established itself as a serious and dark film, but there were jokes delivered by the comic relief that were not landing. The jokes felt out of place and I think if the jokes were cut out entirely, then the film would’ve been even better. The music was a bit distracting because it had an uplifting tone. Although the music matched with the time period, I thought the songs should’ve been different, perhaps have a more dramatic feeling or cut out some of the songs. The editing of the scenes felt choppy. A helicopter crash landed and the main characters who were in the helicopter had no cuts, bruises, or debris, while the other characters came out with cuts and debris. It didn’t happen often, but it was certainly noticeable.

Overall I loved the film when King Kong was on screen, but when he wasn’t I didn’t care for it. The monsters were great. The visuals were great. The editing, jokes, music, and some actors were not so great. Also, for being a PG-13 film it was surprisingly gory. There is a teaser at the end of the credits too so make sure you wait for that.

Final grade: 5/10
