The Defiant Ones Review

I stumbled upon a documentary called The Defiant Ones one night when I was browsing through HBO. The Defiant Ones is a four-part documentary about the rise of Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine, and how Dre became a billionaire from the sale of Dre Beats to Apple.

I was surprised how in depth this documentary went into Jimmy Iovine’s life. Initially I thought it would focus on Dr. Dre, but it was fascinating to see how far Iovine has come through the years. The amount of artists he has worked with and discovered is certainly shocking. He worked with people such as Bruce Springstein and Marilyn Manson.

Dr. Dre’s past was also covered thoroughly. The documentary shows how Dr. Dre started, his time with N.W.A, and building up to Dre Beats. One of the most interesting things about this series was the discovery of Eminem and how Dre worked with Eminem throughout the years. Whenever the series would show Dr. Dre’s life and cut to Jimmy Iovine, I wanted to see more of Dr. Dre because his story captured my attention more than Iovine’s.

Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine eventually find each other and the Defiant Ones does a great job showing their stories and how they worked with each other. The couple of things that really stood out in this show was the editing and the use of music. The documentary is centered around the music industry so the fact that music was used wisely was a phenomenal touch. Each scene flowed with ease and I felt there was never a “bump in the road.”

Final score: 9/10
