I previously made a post about Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, but now that I finished the first Crash Bandicoot game in the trilogy, I decided to make a review post about the first game.

The visuals in this game are great. The developers revamped the look of Crash, the enemies, the boxes, and the environment around Crash. It looks beautiful throughout the game, and I thought they did a great job with the shadows and the use of color. Next, the sound in this game really stood out. I watched an old video of the first ever Crash Bandicoot and the sounds I heard made me think back to my childhood. Although the sounds, like breaking boxes are different, I think it’s a good change because the sound is enhanced. The sounds are not only enhanced for the breaking of boxes, but also Crashes voice/sounds he makes, the spinning, and the music are all remastered.

I actually forgot how difficult this game really was/is. I died A LOT, and even though I enjoy a challenge I certainly got frustrated on some levels. In particular the “Road to Nowhere” level. You’re on a bridge and some of the boards on the bridge are invisible. Some players have said they jump on the rope and walk across the bridge, but I had a difficult time doing this. I kept going at it until I finished the level. Also, you get a gem for completing a level by breaking all of the boxes and not dying a single time. The majority of the time I was able to get the boxes, but dying seemed to be inevitable.
Overall, I loved the visuals, the sounds, and being able to relive my childhood through Crash. There isn’t much of a story line though. You’re in control of Crash and you’re simply jumping from level to level with no real reason why. You run into mini bosses, until running into Cortex at the end. The jumping mechanics in the first game is difficult to control, but this improves in the other two.
Final score: 8/10
What did you think of the first Crash Bandicoot game? How does it compare to the other two in the trilogy? Do you want to see another remaster of a game, like Spyro? Let me know in the comments!
