Going into the movie I didn’t know what to expect. I thought Five Foot Two was going to be about Lady Gaga and how she was discovered. Perhaps we would see some performances, but instead I saw something I didn’t foresee.
Right from the beginning we see Lady Gaga being lifted into the air by cables in NRG Stadium, located in Houston, Texas where the Super Bowl took place in 2017. This is where Gaga performed for the Half-Time Show. The movie/biography shows us the build up to the Half-Time Show. We got to see an up close and personal look at Lady Gaga and the process behind how she composes music, how she works with others, and the struggles she has gone through recently, including an injury she has been trying to overcome.
One thing I wasn’t aware of was the injury Lady Gaga sustained involving her hip. There was a raw moment where you can see the pain and agony she was going through and you could feel the emotion behind it through the small screen. You can see how she struggles with the injury and how emotionally draining it is to go through a serious injury like that.
I had the feeling that Lady Gaga had creative control throughout the film because I didn’t feel like anything was forced or rushed. I thought the film was authentic, personal, and it made me think about Lady Gaga as the person behind the artist known as Lady Gaga. I remember Gaga as someone who wore these outfits that we have never seen before, like the meat dress for instance. Five Foot Two lets us into the life of a musician who cares about her fans, does everything she can for her fans, and we get a small taste of what it’s like to be in her shoes.
Overall I enjoyed this film. It may not have a background on how she worked her way up to become Lady Gaga and show us some of her performances, but there was a wide range of emotions throughout the film, including humor, sadness, depression, and excitement. Behind every artist is a person who has a personal life and we got all of that and more from Mother Monster.
Final Score: 7/10
